May 17, 2010 Board Meeting

Home Schooled Students:
Voted to approve the following fees for Home Schooled Students for 2010-2011 School Year:
     1) 
Student Accident Insurance:  K-1- $16.50; 2-8 – $30.75; High School – $84.50;
     2)  Student Liability Insurance:  $30.00;
     3)  ITBS:  $25.00;
     4)  DIBLES:  No Charge;
     5)  PSAT:  High School – $15.00;
     6)  WrAP:  $15.00;
     7)  Monthly Charge per Course:  Elementary – $50.00; High School – $100.00;
     8)  Elementary Physical Education (per month):  $50.00.
Overnight School Trips will not be available to Home Schooled Students.

Accreditation Committes:
The following committees will be formed to begin completing information for Evaluation Team:
     1)  Coordinating Committee;
     2)  Administration and Staff Committee;
     3)  Curriculum and Instruction and Media Center;
     4)  School Facilities and Information Technology;
     5)  Student Activities, Student Services, Parent/Student Surveys.

Field Trips:
Voted that no sibling shall be taken out of class to attend a field trip with another sibling.
 

April 29, 2010 Board Meeting 

WMA Evaluation
WMA accreditation is scheduled for Spring of 2011.  Randall Fox reviewed procedure WMA will follow in supplying inforamtion to Southern Union and Florida Conference.

Iowa Basic Test Results
James Davis presented a  Power Point presentation on Norm-Referenced results.  The Curriculum Committee did not perceive any discernable patterns.  Students in Grades 3-10 are mostly within or above national norm.  Further study will be done.

Land Acquisition
According to Florida Hospital Heartland Division, the land transfer should be complete by July 31, 2010.

Dual Enrollment
Gloria Becker, FLA principal stated credit will be given for SFCC classes even though there is no formal dual enrollment agreement.  WMA requested written confirmation of this assurance.

Sheriff Recommendations
All recommendations have been implemented except for placing cameras around campus.  This is part of Phase II of WMA’s security plan.  Phase II will be incorporated into the renovation of Administrative Offices.

Bathroom Renovations
Doors have been installed in the Gym bathrooms and remainder of renovations nearly complete.  Committee of 100 donated the funds for the Grils’ bathroom renovation.

Biology II
Verbal assurance has been given from FLA they will award high school credit to students completing Biology II this summer.  WMA requested written confirmation.

Algebra II
A list of students who completed Algebra in 2003, 2005 and 2007, together with their grades has been submitted to Glorida Becker, FLA principal.  A list of the students enrolled in DLA and their grades in the DLA Pre-Calculus course was also provided.  Gordon Davis will supply further information to FLA prior to the end of the school year.  FLA will consider the information in their evaluation of awarding credit for Algebra II, Summer of 2011.

March 15, 2010 Board Meeting

Dual Enrollment
Bruce Anderson, FLDLA, principal provided enrollment contract between FLA and SFCC which expired June 30, 2009.  Bill Farmer is negotiating with SFCC for a new contract.  Lenora McDowall to ask FLA if they will honor credits received  from July 1, 2009 through June 30, 2010. 

Girls’ Gym Bathroom Renovation
Committee of 100 to be contacted for $1,500.00 to complete this renovation.

Fire ‘n Steel Trip
Voted to approve March 25-28 trip to Women’s Retreat in Cohutta Springs, Georgia.  Information provided to Florida Conference.

Alumni Weekend – Sports Fest
This event is sponsored by Asian American Association with funds going to WMA Athletic Fund.

WMA Geography Champ, Joe Beldin
Joe Beldin qualified for State Tournament.
 

February 18, 2010 Board Meeting 

Overnight Trip Requests to Conference
All overnight trips have been approved except the Eighth Grade History Trip.  Information on this trip to be forwarded to the Conference before Spring Break.

Renovations
As requested by the Avon Park SDA Church Development Committee, the WMA Renovation Committee will look into the following renovation projects:  Administrative Offices, Kitchen and Signage Needs.

Senior Class
The Senior Class Auction and Baked Goods Fund Raiser raised over $1,900.00.

Lade Eagles
The Girls’ Baksetball team received a District Trophy.

 


January 21, 2010 Board Meeting

Committee of 100 Request
VOTED to ask the Committee of 100 for $1,000.00 to renovate the Girls’ Bathroom in the Gym to paint, install new fixtures and mirror, power wash the tile and grout.

CPR Training
Darla Toulouse is coordinating efforts to get staff who have not completed their training certified.

Tutoring
WMA has a paid tutor and several volunteers working with underachieving students.

Health Department Training
Health Department training was completed this month.  Mr. and Mrs. Garcia completed the training.

Food Policy
Study group consisting of Darla Toulouse, Stella Asumbrado and Rosalie Oliver to recommend a food policy that addresses all issues concerning food served or sold at WMA.

Overnight Trip Requests
Forida Conference mandates all overnight trip request be sent to the conference for their approval for insurance purposes.  Requests to be submitted on orbefore February 2010.

Senior Class Trip Request
Voted to postpone Senior Trip until after school is out in May to allow additional time to fundraise.

WMA Foundation
The Foundation is proving tuition funds for several students.  Presently have a car to sell.

Prayer Conference
Twenty high school students attended.  Nikki Paradero, Darren Martin and Jacob participated in Staff Leadership.  Vivian Cook, Orlando Hernandez and Mr. and Mrs. Novy served as chaperones.

Athlete Eligibility
All students participating in any of the competitive sports at WMA must submit an Egilibity Form weekly, showing either a Pass or Fail grade for each class and signed by each of their teachers.

Federal Funding
Bill Farmer will participate in webinar on federal funding and meet with Pat Landress, Highlands County School Board to determine WMA’s eligibility for same.

 

 December 15, 2009 Board Meeting 

Reports to Board
WMA Choir will perform at Disney on Thursday, December 17.
First Semester ends on December 18.
The Student Association Christmas Banquet was well attended and successful.

Community Services
The Board recommended that Avon Park Seventh-day Adventist Community Services contact WMA students to volunteer at the center.

Web Page – 10th Grade Advanced Computer Class
The Board voted that the 10th Grade Advanced Computer Class spend part of their classtime updating WMA’s website.

Gate Keypads be Installed
The Board recommended that keypads be installed on WMA’s front gates.

National Honor Society Sponsorship- James Davis
The Board voted that Vice-Principal James Davis’ job description be amended to include sponsorhip of the National Honor Society. 


November 16, 2009 Board Meeting
 

Action List Update
Hospital Land Transfer:  Survey completed and hospital expects transfer to be completed by January 2010.
Gate Pad Installation:   Anticipated to be completed by January 2010.
Health Department Training:  To be completed in January 2010.

Renovations Committee
Voted to give study to renovate kitchen and bathrooms; renovate or replace current WMA sign; investigate other signage needs.

Florida Board of Education
Lenora McDowall, Chair has been elected to the Florida Board of Education for a three-year term ending in 2012.  The Board oversees Adventist education from Early Childhood through Grade 12.

Reports to Board
SAC Accreditation combined with Southern Union Accreditation will no longer be available.  Each accreditation must be a separate process.
Overnight Trips must be approved by Florida Conference Board of Education.  All international trips must be approved by NAD.

Curriculum Committee
Voted to have the Curriculum Committee investigate the possibility of incorporating some 11 and 12th Grade Classes into WMA curriculum using various educational systems, including but not limited to:  Florida Virtual School, Classes taught on campus at WMA, Community College dual enrollment and Griggs University.  The committee is to report to the Board at February meeting.

Fundraisers
Voted all fundraisers be approved by AD council and major fundraisers sent to Board for approval.  Ad Council to develop policies and procedures for fundraisers.

October 19, 2009 Board Meeting 

Sheriff’s Recommendations
The following items have been completed:  Motion sensors on Principal’s outside door; Small pad locks on fence gates; Bike rack moved; Lighting in front of gym.
The following items remain to be completed:  Motions sensors around campus; Additional lights around campus; Review of current security system.

Land from Hospital
Tim Cook, CEO of Florida Hospital-Heartland relayed the land transfer to WMA was approved by the Hospital Board.  Procedures are in place to complete the transfer.

WMA Board Web Page
Still to be included are the 2008-2009 survey results and items identified as needing further attention.  These items are:  Dual enrollment for Grades 11 and 12; Challenge overachievers; Help underachievers.

Health Department Kitchen Recommendations
Representatives of those handling hot lunches and other food fundraisers attend a class conducted by Health Department regarding proper handling of food.  Food policy to be developed after attendance at class to be presented to AD Council and WMA Board for approval.

Summer Distance Learning Renovation Project
Budget:  $72,000.00;  Raised: $70,018.63;  Actual Cost:  $69,528.18.

Revised Budget 2009-2010
Based on 238 Students  -  VOTED to submit budget to Florida Conference.

CPR and First Aid Certification
All fulltime staff members have completed training.

School Uniform Policy
Study group to be formed to study supplier options for WMA uniforms.
